Why You Should Stop Using the Term Surrogate Mother and Other Surrogacy Myths

July 18, 20232 min read

More and more people are turning to surrogacy as a way to build their families. As a former Intended Parent, I’m shedding light on some common surrogacy misconceptions and providing a more accurate understanding of this family-building option.

Myth 1: The term surrogate mother is appropriate

One common myth is that the term surrogate mother is an appropriate title for the woman carrying the baby for the Intended Parents. It really surprised me how often I heard this term during my journeys; even from medical professionals. Most Intended Parents will share that they find this term hurtful. The surrogate, most commonly referred to as a gestational carrier, does not have any biological connection to the baby and will not be parenting the child. When using a gestational carrier, the embryo is created using the eggs and sperm of the Intended Parents or donors. Gestational carriers prefer to be called just that, GCs, or surrogates. Let’s save the mother part for the Intended Mother (when applicable)!

Myth 2: Surrogacy is reserved only for the wealthy

It is true that surrogacy is a huge financial undertaking. However, surrogacy is not just for celebrities or the wealthy. There are different types of programs and financial options for Intended Parent(s) to help afford surrogacy. Although not common, some insurance companies may have surrogacy as part of the benefit package. There are even grants that families can apply for to help make surrogacy more accessible.

Myth 3: Surrogacy is exploitative

Another myth surrounding surrogacy is that it can be exploitative for vulnerable women. When a woman decides to become a surrogate, the process is extensive to ensure everyone is protected. One of the reasons the process is so lengthy is to ensure that the surrogate is fully informed and it is safe for her to carry a baby, both physically and mentally.

Surrogates need to have a psychological evaluation to ensure they are emotionally equipped to handle surrogacy. In most states, a legal contract is required prior to the embryo transfer to protect the surrogate and the Intended Parent(s). The legal agreement, unless it is an altruistic surrogacy, will also include the compensation for the surrogate and how payments will be dispersed. Most states also require that the surrogate is not receiving government financial assistance as a way to ensure the surrogate is not being exploited. Most surrogates will share that they’ve felt incredibly empowered to be able to help a family's dream come true.
