On April 1st, 2024, Governor Whitmer signed the Michigan Family Protection Act. Michigan was the last state to criminalize surrogacy contracts, making this a huge win for Intended Parents and Surrogates not only residing in Michigan, but across the country. Previously, only altruistic (uncompensated) surrogacy agreements were permitted in Michigan.

Previously those living in Michigan who wished to pursue third-party reproduction needed to either pursue an altruistic surrogacy arrangement, which is incredibly difficult, or pursue surrogacy in a state that where surrogacy is legal. Some of the previous legal implications caused Intended Parents to have difficulty establishing parentage.
